The Oak Lawn Village Trustee election for 2015 is over but the old wounds will probably remain for a while. Everyone is saying the right thing about working together now but only days ago, the long knives were out.
Most of those knives were directed at veteran Trustee Robert Streit, who ended up trouncing his two opponents. For the first time in a long time, two Village Trustees left the comfort of their own district to campaign against a fellow board member.
That’s hardly a shining example of working together.
Trustee Alex Olejniczak sent a letter attacking Streit but seemed to back off his assault after residents complained loudly.
The same can’t be said for Trustee Terry Vorderer, who not only sent a letter into the district but also walked the walk by knocking on doors and spreading his take on the issues.
Even after his infamous attack literature was discredited by village records, Vorderer continued to knock on doors to “tell the truth”. On Monday night, he was knocking on doors with an unidentified woman, insisting that he could tell the voters the real story about crime and the issues with the police and fire departments.
Most people rejected Vorderer. Yet, he stuck to his story even in the face of facts disproving his argument.
Now, he has to sit on the same board as Streit, who he called a liar.
So far, Vorderer and Olejniczak haven’t apologized for their behavior. They will have two chances a month to do so for the next two years.
Let’s see if they really want to work with Streit or continue to attack.
