According to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office, Sandra Bury has failed to pay the property taxes due on her condominium.
Sandra Bury’s condo has four property identification numbers related to her unit in the condominium building located at 9440 S 51st Ave. Taxes on all of those parcels are in arrears. At least one of those properties has been in arrears since August 1st, 2014; over eight months ago.
March 3rd, 2015, was the date that Sandra Bury was due to pay her taxes for the 2014 tax year. As of April 11th, those taxes had still not been paid. In total, Bury owed $1,118.14 in property taxes and penalties as of April 11th.
Despite owing property taxes, Bury transferred $1,20000 into her campaign fund, Sandra Bury for Mayor of Oak Lawn from her personal funds on March 17th, 2015. A week later, on March 24th, 2015, Bury transferred $1,00000 of that to Tim Desmond’s campaign, Friends of Tim Desmond. Bury also mailed endorsement letters for Dan Johnson and Scott Hollis in their failed campaigns for election as District 5 and District 3 Trustees, respectively.
This isn’t the first time Bury has made questionable decisions regarding campaign financing. During and after her 2013 campaign for mayor, Sandra Bury came under fire for her questionable campaign financing practices. On March 19th, 2014, the Illinois State Board of Elections issued an order finding that Bury violated the law that requires all candidates to publicly disclose contributions to their political fund exceeding $1000 within 48 hours of the receipt of the contribution.
Among other things, property taxes in Oak Lawn go toward funding local schools, libraries, parks, and the various functions of the Village government such as snow plowing, flood abatement, street and alley paving, and the police and fire departments. Considered a part-time position, the office of Mayor paid Sandra Bury $47,90608 in 2014. The funds used to pay salaries of the Village’s elected officials generally come from property taxes.
