The Village of Oak Lawn released records indicating that Mayor Sandra Bury and four Village Trustees have taxpayer funded cell phones but refuse to provide records on who the elected officials are calling on the taxpayers’ dime.
In addition to Bury, Trustees Tim Desmond (Dist. 1), Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2), Terry Vorderer (Dist. 4) and Michael Carberry (Dist. 6) have taxpayer funded cell phones that are theoretically supposed to be used only for village business. Village Manager Larry Deetjen and Trustee Robert Streit (Dist. 3) do not have taxpayer funded phones although four appointed officials do have the phones.
Despite the fact that the phones are paid for with village tax dollars, the Village of Oak Lawn has refused to turn over records that indicate who the Mayor and Trustees are calling on these phones. Instead, in response to a Freedom of Information request from the Oak Lawn Leaf, the Village redacted pages and pages of phone numbers that it deemed were “private information” exempt from the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. The Oak Lawn Leaf never requested the name or address of the individuals called but the Village wouldn’t even provide the numbers that were called by the Trustees or Mayor.
It appears that the only phone numbers provided by the village are governmental office numbers including the village’s own numbers.
