Village Doesn’t Provide Criminal Sex Offense Reports To Trustees Or Public
Word out of the Mayor’s and Village Manager’s office is that the Oak Lawn Police Department, in addition to not providing all the burglary reports, does not provide sex crime reports to the Village Trustees or the public. It raises the question on how the Daily Southtown was able to report about a man propositioning a woman for sex in the parking lot of Mariano’s a week ago. More importantly, if a sex offender was on the loose, which we don’t think is the case, the public would not have a right to know the information. This idea was used back in the 1990’s also when a serial sex offender was on the loose and some in the administration thought it was best to not alert the public in order to not scare off the criminal.

After an alert Oak Lawn Leaf reader provided a “tip” to us regarding a village appointee’s failure to secure a permit prior to beginning work on his home in Oak Lawn, we ran a Tip It. The appointee, outed himself, confessing that the story was about him. The appointee, Paul Vail, had announced an intention to run for Trustee in the last election but ended up backing out. He was appointed by Mayor Sandra Bury as an adviser (a new position) to the Planning and Development Commission. Vail wrote to us saying that the failure to get a permit was a mix up and that he had left the project undone because of the weather. Now comes word that he has finished the work after securing a permit.
