Last week, Oak Lawn police officers responded to a one car accident at 87th and Cicero Avenue that resulted in charges against the driver, a 25 year old white female from Joliet.
According to the police, an officer responded to an accident involving a single vehicle striking a traffic signal. The police reported that they found the traffic signal on the ground near the woman’s car. The car itself was “parked” on an elevated slab of concrete that is designed to separate the right turn lane from the traffic traveling through the intersection. The driver, who was later identified as Renee Pila, was seated in the passenger seat. Nobody was in the driver’s seat.
Pila claimed that another automobile had hit the rear of her car causing her car to run into the traffic signal. However, Chicago Police officers were also on the scene and were stopped at the light when the accident occurred. According to the two Chicago officers, they witnessed Pila “drive” her car into the pole without any contact from another vehicle. The Oak Lawn officer also noted in his report that Pila’s car did not sustain any rear end damage.
After arriving on the scene and making sure Pila was not seriously injured, the officer’s report indicated that he could smell a strong odor of alcohol from the car. Pila’s eyes were allegedly bloodshot and glassy according to the police.
When first asked if she had been drinking, Pila denied it. The police reported that Pila had trouble standing and began walking backward toward oncoming traffic. The police officer moved Pila to a safe area to protect her from other cars. The officer again asked Pila if she had been drinking alcohol. This time, according to the report, she admitted to having a “few” drinks. She allegedly told the officer that a few meant three beers.
After asking Pila to follow his fingers with her eyes, the officer determined that Pila may have been impaired. When the officer requested that Pila sit in the back of the squad car, she allegedly began arguing with the police stating that she wanted to drive home. The officer informed Pila that her car was not in a condition to be driven and would be towed because it hit the traffic signal and sustained damage.
Pila was asked to perform the field sobriety tests and she allegedly responded that it was “too cold”. He also asked if she would submit to a breathalyzer test and she refused.
Pila was placed under arrest for the suspicion of driving under the influence. She allegedly began kicking her legs in the officer’s direction and refused to exit the vehicle.
Pila then allegedly said “I`ll step out on my own bitch.” As the male officer was placing handcuffs on Pila, she allegedly began struggling and pulled her right arm away. After being told to stop resisting the officer was able to grab hold of her right hand. Pila allegedly then said, “I didn`t say shit bitch.”
While being transported to Oak Lawn’s booking, Pila allegedly asked the officer if he could just drop her off somewhere. When the officer replied that he could not, he alleged that Pila began kicking the windows and plastic divider in the squad car.
Pila allegedly then told the officer that she had a previous DUI arrest and attempted to slit her wrists after the incident. The officer stopped the car in attempt to better secure Pila. According to the report, Pila allegedly attempted to kick him numerous times when he opened the rear passenger side door of the car.
Pila allegedly yelled that she had to use the washroom and threatened to urinate in the squad.
The officer, in an attempt to make sure that Pila did not hurt herself, stopped the vehicle and called for a single “cage” car to meet him at Southwest Highway and Cicero. When the officer moved to the rear passenger side of the vehicle to speak with Pila to ensure she did not harm herself by kicking out the car windows, she allegedly yelled “Take these handcuffs off me you stupid fat bitch”, and began spitting in his direction.
She allegedly pretended to be sleeping the car when it pulled up to the station. According to the report, she refused to exit the vehicle and had to be carried into the booking area. She allegedly began kicking at two officers and continued to spit.
She said she needed to see a doctor and the police cautiously notified dispatch to call an ambulance. According to the report, she was combative and needed to be restrained while being transported to the hospital.
At the hospital, the officer reported that Pila continued to be verbally abusive and combative toward all the people she came in contact with including the hospital staff. She allegedly kicked, spit on, and attempted to bite hospital staff members.
The hospital staff drew blood and advised the police that she had blood alcohol content of 0.163, which is twice the legal limit for driving. The hospital also allegedly found a green baggie containing residue of a white substance on Pila.
Pila was charged with Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, and Resisting of Obstructing a Peace Officer. Pila is being held on $25000 in Cook County Jail.
