This past week, Oak Lawn Police responded to a disturbance on the 8700 block of Meade Avenue. The victim told responding officers that a large sum of money had been stolen from her bedroom.
The victim was sharing a house with others, renting a single room. Officers noted that the door showed signs of tampering. The trim around the door was loose enough to slip a credit card into in order to activate the handle. There were also pry marks near the handle, indicating the door had been unlocked several times with a pry tool.
According to the victim, the pry marks were old. She suspected that someone with a key had stolen her money, or someone who had access while the door was unlocked.
The victim stated that she had been saving up money in order to travel out of the country. The location she chose to use for storing the money was her mattress.
The victim did not suspect the two other tenants of the house. The main suspect is the landlord. Days before the theft was reported, the victim was asked to move her car. The victim left her room unlocked while fulfilling the request. The landlord was inside the house at the time.
At the time of publication, it was unknown if the property had a valid rental license on file with the Village.
