Bernard Jones, of Milwaukee, was arrested Saturday, August 13th, after police allegedly observed him speeding.
Oak Lawn Police patrolling Central Avenue near 100th Street clocked Jones traveling 65 mph in a 30 mph zone. As police attempted to catch up, they observed Jones driving over the lane divider line. Jones swerved between lanes without signaling. Officers caught up to Jones at Southwest Highway.
When officers approached to ask for a driver’s license and proof of insurance, they immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol and burnt cannabis. Jones was wearing sunglasses, despite it being well past midnight. When he took them off, the officer noted that Jones had bloodshot, glassy eyes.
Jones provided the officer with a medical release form instead of a driver’s license. After looking through his glove box, Jones was unable to produce valid insurance.
According to the police, when asked to step out of the vehicle, Jones noticeably swayed as he moved to the trunk. Due to the inclement weather, Jones was taken immediately into custody. At the Police Department, field sobriety tests were administered, which Jones was unable to successfully perform.
A search of Jones’s vehicle allegedly produced a bottle of Ciroc Apple Vodka on the passenger floor that was half empty, and a small plastic baggie with suspected cannabis in the center console.
Bernard Jones was cited for driving under the influence of combined alcohol and other compounds, aggravated speeding 35+ mph over the posted limit, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage, failing to signal when required, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of cannabis more than 2.5g but less than 10g, reckless driving, and no valid insurance.
