A popular belief, passed on through the U.S. education system for years, was that Europeans believed the world was flat in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed west.
That belief has been debunked by scholars who now say that most educated people of that time knew the world was round. As we celebrate Columbus Day, it may be worth questioning whether Oak Lawn’s Village leadership acts as if the residents still believe the world is flat.
How else can we explain the fact that Village Officials continue to use board meetings, a political newspaper, a political blogger, the police administration, and Facebook to promote ideas that run counter to common sense.
In 2013, the current Mayor, Sandra Bury, was elected on a platform to close down businesses that have multiple incidents of criminal activity. She placed all the blame for Chuck E. Cheese squarely on the shoulders of one man, her opponent, former Mayor Dave Heilmann.
Bury claimed then that such businesses would have their license revoked but when Trustee Robert Streit suggested that a hearing be held to revoke the license, Bury and her cronies sounded more like Ralph Kramden than inspired leaders like Christopher Columbus who sailed to the new world in 1492.
Trustee Terry Vorderer talked about “due process” and the Mayor spoke about how the management at Chuck E. Cheese has complied with every request. Vorderer told the Daily Southtown that while there have been over 350 emergency police dispatch calls through 9-1-1, not all of the calls resulted in police reports. He said he was going to make sure that the Police Chief begins making reports of “all incidents”.
Not exactly the tough talk you would expect from the people who made Chuck E. Cheese such an important issue in their campaigns. In fact, the criminal activity caused Bury and her cronies to promise to increase the gang crimes unit for the police department and one Trustee even said that ten new gang crimes officers would be hired. Newsflash, they weren’t hired.
Bury and her cronies used the trouble at Chuck E. Cheese to get elected in 2013. More recently, Bury was on major media outlets like WLS 890 Am Radio, NBC5 TV news, and WBEZ complaining about the problems at Chuck E. Cheese. DeJa Vu?
Yes the world is round and we know that by looking at the Earth, whatever goes around comes around. It’s like it’s still 2013 and we are being told the world is flat.
