Mayor Sandra Bury and her allies posted an old photo and fake news story on Facebook falsely attacking her opponent for Mayor, Trustee Robert Streit.
The post claimed that an abandoned truck was parked behind Streit’s office. The post also wrongly claimed that Streit owned the van. A simple check of the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office indicated that the truck was never owned by Streit or any company he owns.
The post on January 26th stated:
Economic development is clearly NOT Oak Lawn Mayoral Candidate Streit’s strong point. He likes to accuse Mayor Bury of “steering” development away from Southwest Highway, but the reality is that Streit actually CHASES AWAY investment in his own district. The area around Streit’s office in District 3 is the NASTIEST in Oak Lawn, and has been for decades (as long as Streit has “represented” the area.)
At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, Streit actually told someone looking purchase and renovate property on Southwest Highway that he wanted the option to revoke his business license if the new business became successful! This photo taken outside Streit’s “constituent office” says it all. “THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT BOB STREIT…” the more you see how TOXIC he is for Oak Lawn’s future.
There are several problems with the post, including the fact that the vehicle, according to the Illinois Secretary of State was never registered to Streit or any company he owns or has owned. In fact, the vehicle’s license plate isn’t registered to anyone in Oak Lawn as of this date.
In addition, the orange sticker on the vehicle isn’t even the current sticker used by the State of Illinois. The 2017 color is green and the orange color hasn’t been used since 2013 meaning the vehicle may not have been parked anywhere in Oak Lawn in recent years.
A check behind Streit’s constituent service office at 9711 Southwest Highway showed that this vehicle was not behind the building. In addition, Streit is not recorded in the minutes ever stating that he wanted to “revoke (anyone’s) business license if the new business became successful”.
Bury has been caught in the past lying publicly and she has set up political committees that have sent out questionable campaign literature touting false numbers regarding home values. Her most infamous gaffe may have occurred when she repeatedly denied the existence of the “Phelan Hit List”. After the list, which set forth a plan to fire vendors and employees who were not considered loyal, was published by the Oak Lawn Leaf she was forced to admit that the list did exist.
Sandra Bury has steadfastly refused to speak with reporters from the Oak Lawn Leaf. Robert Streit had a short response when told of the posts. “I’m not surprised that the Mayor is wasting her time on these issues rather than increasing police patrols and restoring our firefighters and paramedics to a number that provides public safety for the people of Oak Lawn,” he stated.
