February 12th and 13th feature two winter activities but one is most closely associated with winter fun while the other reminds us of the upcoming spring season.
The Oak Lawn Park District’s Ice Arena’s Valentine Skate takes place on Sunday the 12th from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. The Oak Lawn Park District is inviting all residents to share their love for the ice with a loved one in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The “sweet” afternoon includes skating, a visit from everyone’s favorite snowman, raffles and music provided by a disc jockey.
The Ice Arena is located at 9320 S. Kenton Avenue. The fee for this event is $7.00 for admission and $3.00 for skate rental.
A day later, the Oak Lawn Park District Winter Seed Sowing Class features Horticulturist Dolly Foster who will teach participants about winter seed sowing, a method of starting plants from seed outdoors in winter. The class takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30pm. This same winter sowing method can be used in early spring to give half-hardy annuals a good start. This requires less care than indoor seed sowing, increases the amount of space available, and, best of all, creates plants that are ready to go in the garden without the hardening off process required with nursery stock.
Fee is $7per person. Registration code is 327102-01.
