Monty Python had a song called “The Lumberjack Song” in which the troupe sang about a burly man who worked hard all day as a lumberjack and then dressed in women’s clothing at night to go to bars.
Oak Lawn Police may have found their own version of the lumberjack recently when the observed a Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed on Southwest Highway from Cicero Avenue headed toward 52nd Avenue at about 1:30 a.m.
The driver allegedly passed through a red light after weaving from the left to right lanes without signaling. According to the police report, the officer recorded the driver traveling at 63 miles per hour in the 30 mile per hour zone. The car was stopped at about 55th avenue.
The officer asked the driver for a license and insurance card. The driver, identified as Taron Delaney, was reportedly wearing women’s clothing and had long hair. The driver allegedly admitted that he did not have a driver’s license and never did have one. The passenger, who owned the car, was able to produce an insurance card.
When he was asked where he was going, Delaney allegedly told officers he was looking for “Ashland”. The officer reported that Delaney’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his speech was slurred and there was a strong odor of alcohol. However, when the officer asked if Delaney had been drinking he allegedly said no but admitted to smoking marijuana, which the officer reported smelling.
When asked to exit the vehicle, Delaney did so but the police officer noted that Delaney did not have shoes on his feet. The officer asked him to put his shoes on. He was placed in custody for aggravated speeding.
A check of the Illinois State Records indicated that Delaney did not have a license but the identification noted he was a male, which was news to the officer who had up until that time thought it was a female. According to the report, during the transport to the police station, Delaney told the officer he was a “transsexual”.
Police conducted field sobriety tests but Delaney refused the breath tests according to the police. During the booking Delaney refused to be processed and reportedly shouted “hospital” claiming he was having trouble breathing. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance and treated. An inventory report of the car included a partially consumed bottle of cognac, several cans of Miller Beer, a flat mirror with white residue, and a disposable cup with alcohol.
When he returned to the police station, he was charged with Aggravated DUI, disobeying a red signal, improper lane usage, aggravated speeding, no driver’s license, illegal transportation of alcohol and vehicle used with illegal activities.
At booking, Delaney was agitated according to the police report. He allegedly shouted at staff members, “go ahead and shoot me. I know that you want to shoot me. Police shoot and kill transsexuals.”
Delaney is a 25 year old black male standing five foot three inches and weighing 110 pounds. He provided police with a Chicago address on Laflin Street.
