Gun shots rang out on Saturday evening at Oak Lawn’s Memorial Park, and now neighbors are fed up that their concerns about crime have been ignored.
On Saturday, May 20th, around 9 pm, multiple gun shots were heard from Memorial Park, located in Trustee Bud Stalker’s District 5 at 102nd & Major. Neighbors called the police immediately to report the shots. Some of the witnesses were Chicago police officers, in the neighborhood for a family party. For their part, there was no mistaking the sound of gun shots.
Initial reports suggested about 10 shots were fired into the air from a gray SUV. The SUV fled the area. While their were no reports of injuries, as we all know, what goes up must come down. The potential for injury was there.
Neighbors have lodged concerns with the Village and Park District about the activities that occur at Memorial Park. Some neighbors have gone so far as to say they no longer feel safe in the neighborhood. Even going so far as to suggest moving away.
For years, neighbors have complained about the basketball courts, the poor lighting, littering, and grilling in the park. None of those issues have been linked to the gun shots on Saturday, but neighbors are fed up all the same.
Some residents have stated that they’ve been in contact with elected officials for the Village and the Park District, but they feel their concerns have been systematically ignored.
At this time, it is unknown if any suspects are in custody.
