The Oak Lawn police were called to Memorial Park last month to investigate an intoxicated subject. According to the dispatch, the subjects were allegedly drinking alcohol near the “splash pad” at Memorial Park.
When the police arrived they found a man and a woman laying on the ground apparently sleeping. The woman, who was not arrested and was not identified, woke up and allegedly told the officer that her and the man, identified as Andy Medina, were drinking alcohol in the park and fell asleep. Medina didn’t wake up immediately according to police reports of the incident.
When he did wake up, he allegedly told the police that he was drinking in the park. Police officers were not surprised by the admission after seeing “several bottles” of Olde English 40 ounce beer on the ground. One of the bottles was empty but the other bottle was half full. The officers allege that Medina was slurring his words while talking and he had blood shot eyes.
After checking the Joliet man’s identity in the police records, the officer at the scene discovered that Medina had an outstanding warrant from the Will County Sheriff’s Department for driving while his license was suspended. The warrant had been issued on June 2, 2017 in the amount of $7,500. The officer reported that when Medina was told to place his hands behind his back because there was a warrant for his arrest, Medina pulled away and attempted to run away. Two officers grabbed Medina and placed him into handcuffs.
The police claim that Medina stiffened his arms and allegedly attempted to pull away from being handcuffed. When being placed in the squad, Medina allegedly pushed off the car and tried to run away. While being transported to the police lockup Medina was allegedly yelling at the officer driving the squad. The officers alleged that it took two officers to search him and that he was uncooperative during the booking process. He allegedly pounded on the door and yelled in the cell until drifting off to sleep.
Medina, a 24 year old white male, provided a Joliet address. He was arrested for two counts of resisting a police officer, being under the influence of alcohol in a park, and held for the outstanding warrant. He has a court date today in Bridgeview for the incident.
The woman, who was allegedly sleeping in the park, noted that her daughter is Medina’s girlfriend and that they have a child together. The girlfriend, her child, and the mother of the girlfriend were allowed to leave without incident.
