Oak Lawn police detectives saw a man walking through a parking lot at 96th and Pulaski last month and stopped him after only minutes earlier arresting the man’s girlfriend for retail theft.
The man that was walking was identified as Kevin Whitworth, a 36 year old white male from Alsip. Detectives told Withworth that his girlfriend had just been stopped for retail theft and a search of her revealed heroin. The girlfriend told the police that her boyfriend, Withworth, had put the heroin in her purse.
Withworth not only denied the accusation that he would place heroin in anyone’s purse but he also denied that he possessed any contraband. According to the police, he offered to allow the officers to search him. The detectives, who rarely pass up on such an offer, searched Whitworth, who they allege was carrying “a metal tin” used to carry heroin.
Whitworth allegedly then admitted that he was carrying heroin in his underwear. Whitworth recovered the heroin from the back of his underwear, according to police, and handed it to the glove handed detectives who placed it in evidence. The police claim that two needles were also recovered from Whitworth’s backpack.
Whitworth was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and allegedly admitted to having an addiction and needing assistance with overcoming the addiction. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
The girlfriend, Candace Cavanaugh, a 34 year old white female from Oak Lawn, was observed by detectives at KMart on 95th and Pulaski. The detectives recognized Cavanaugh and followed her into the store, where they allege that she took flowers without paying.
In addition to the heroin that Cavanaugh identified as belonging to her boyfriend, the officers found 5 needles, according to the report. Cavanaugh was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and retail theft.
