An observant Oak Lawn police officer and multiple complaints recently led to the arrest of a man who was allegedly driving erratically on Cicero Avenue near 99th Street.
The officer stopped the pick up truck and the driver opened the car door as the officer approached. The officer claimed that he noticed the man’s eyes were bloodshot and while speaking with him, the officer claimed that he smelled alcohol on his breath. The officer reported that the speech pattern of the man, identified as Willie Sawyer, was slurred and mumbled. The officer also claimed that Sawyer seemed confused.
When asked where he was coming from, Sawyer, allegedly told the officer that he was coming from his girlfriend’s house in Chicago. When asked if he was drinking at the girlfriend’s house, Sawyer allegedly shook his head up and down to signify “yes” but said “no”.
The officers on the scene reported finding an open bottle of Heineken beer in between the driver’s and passenger’s seat. When asked about it, Sawyer claimed that he had drank that beer but nothing else.
The officer reported that Sawyer had to grab the vehicle to brace himself and that he rocked back and forth appearing to have trouble standing. The officer had Sawyer perform the standardized field sobriety tests and reported that he failed those tests. Sawyer was arrested for driving under the influence.
The officer alleged that a search of the vehicle uncovered one open bottle of Dimitri’s Gin near the driver’s seat. Sawyer allegedly attempted to submit to the alcohol breath test but despite 9 attempts was allegedly unable to provide a steady stream of air.
Sawyer, a 63 year old black man from Country Club Hills, was charged with driving under the influence, possessing open alcohol in the car, failure to signal, and improper lane usage.
