A viewing party for tomorrow’s total solar eclipse will take place at 12:45pm Monday, Aug. 21, at Advocate Christ Hospital as hospitalized children get the chance to head outside and view this rare astronomical wonder through special glasses.
Pediatric patients will learn the science behind the eclipse and receive special eclipse glasses that will allow them to safely watch the eclipse, which is experts say will be at maximum exposure at 1:10 pm local time. Children who are able to do so will be escorted outside; others will view the scene from a window inside the hospital. Adler Planetarium astronomer and astrophysics professor at Northwestern University Shane L. Larson will educate pediatric patients at Advocate Children’s Hospital about the science behind the eclipse through a taped video discussion prior to the eclipse viewing.
The opportunity was arranged by Dr. Caroline Hu, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital, and her fiancé, Jeremiah Seraphine, a graduate of the Medill integrated marketing communications program at Northwestern. Said Seraphine: “Since the kids can’t make it to any of the big festivals celebrating the eclipse, we can bring the party to them.”
