Several police units responded to a home for a “battery” in progress after a man passing by noticed a group of 8 people involved in a fight in the front of a residence in the 9800 block of Kostner.
One of the combatants had left the scene and another officer recognized the description of the vehicle and stopped the driver, who requested an ambulance due to injuries he sustained.
The officers arriving on the scene saw that one of the men was bleeding from his mouth and had a bruised face. An ambulance was also called for that man, who said that he was a roofer and that they were installing a roof on the home.
The man who had driven away also works for the same company but that man drives the trailer and picks up the roofing debris. Apparently, the driver was upset that the job was taking so long since he had dropped the trailer off in the morning and now it was about 6 p.m. in the evening.
The driver had sent the roofer 17 text messages, between about 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The messages contained English as well as Spanish words, including referring to the roofer as part of the female anatomy.
When the driver arrived at the home, apparently upset the roofers were not yet done, he allegedly punched the one roofer. The roofer, no slouch in street fighting himself, told the police he “took” the driver down to the ground and continued punching him in order to stop the driver’s attack.
The counter punching was so effective that police reported that the driver eventually left. The punching roofer did not want to press charges.
The police visited the driver at Little Company of Mary Hospital. The driver admitted that he thought the work should have been completed but the roofer challenged him when he mentioned it upon his arrival. He claimed the roofer started the whole confrontation by calling him a “bitch”.
The driver admitted to sending the text messages including the one referring to the roofer crudely as a part of the female anatomy. He also said that the roofer “…is my worker and he has to take that sh..”
The roofer sustained a broken jaw but refused to press charges.
