If you can remember back to your own school days, “announcements” were one of the most boring parts of the day. Even the legendary “Grease” made fun of announcements.
Well the real fun may just be beginning as one District 123 principal is combining technology with the dreary duty of announcements to spark interest in the mundane task.
Mr. Wawczak, Principal of Covington is going “live” with announcements via YouTube.
“I came up with the idea to do announcements this way from a Twitter chat this past summer. There were a few principals from around the country, mostly from middle and high schools, talking about how they did announcements with their audio visual clubs. It sounded like a great idea that shouldn’t be limited to just older grades,” said Wawczak.
YouTube Live not only allows for the morning announcements to be streamed through audio but video as well. Using a link provided by Wawczak classrooms throughout the school can tune in and see the announcements.
“I think that students enjoy this way of announcements because they’re more personal. They don’t just hear a voice over the loudspeakers in the morning but rather we are ‘in’ the classrooms with them. It becomes much more personal. Additionally, I feel as though we can show a little more of our personality through this kind of morning announcements and they’re more fun. My favorite part of the day is being with the staff and students and this is just another way to do so, he said.
Principal Wawczak hopes to start streaming the live announcements more frequently as technology becomes easier and easier to use.(Above)Jasmine, a Covington student, and Mr. Wawczak prep for the morning announcements. Photo courtesy of District 123.
