About a year ago, on the eve of Mayor Sandra Bury’s re-election, a new political action committee, with connections to Mayor Sandra Bury’s political organization, mailed thousands of political mailings to voters congratulating Mayor Sandra Bury and her allies on the Village Board for what they claimed was a 25% decrease in crime.
Now, the official FBI 2016 Crime Statistics have been released showing the 25 percent claim to be false. Instead, despite previous protests to the contrary by Bury, the FBI report shows violent crime increasing by just over 11 percent, in 2016, and property crimes increasing over 14 percent, in 2016 despite a drop nationally.
The political action committee claimed in the literature that the 25% reduction in crime has been since Bury became Mayor. At the time of Bury’s claim, the village had suffered through an unprecedented string of robberies and social media enthusiasts attacked the claim on various websites. Despite what many thought to be unbelievable claims, Bury and her chosen slate of candidates defeated longtime Trustee Robert Streit and three newcomers this past April arguing it was Streit who was misstating the numbers.
According to the FBI, Oak Lawn was victimized by 79 violent crimes in 2016 which was 8 more violent crimes than the year before. Those violent crimes included 38 robberies, 33 aggravated assaults, 7 rapes and one homicide.
While violent crime has increased nationally, property crime has decreased. However, Oak Lawn was not part of that decrease with property crimes increasing from 816 to 937. Burglaries, motor vehicle thefts and retail thefts are some of the crimes classified as “property crimes”.
Last year, the Oak Lawn Leaf reported on the increase of crime challenging the Mayor’s statistics and false claims.
The story had a familiar ring to it because a year earlier crime was also debated at the village board. On October 30, 2015, the Oak Lawn Leaf published a story regarding Bury’s previous claims that crime had decreased. In that story, FBI statistics showed FBI crime statistics, whereby most violent crimes increased.
In addition to publishing the false numbers in the campaign, Bury and Trustee Terry Vorderer attacked Streit and his slate claiming that it was Streit that was not being truthful. Now, the FBI statistics show that Streit was correct.
