Oak Lawn’s Homeless “problem” Continues
Village Manager Larry Deetjen is reportedly in hot pursuit of several apparently homeless individuals who congregate near the library. Deetjen has reportedly railed for years about the “problem” but the library leadership and police officers have had a different view. Bottom line is that Deetjen wants something done about the “problem” without spending any money. The courts have taken a negative view of municipal efforts to remove homeless individuals. It should be noted that some residents, like the library, don’t think its a problem. Some residents, however, have complained to Deetjen.

What’s new? Negotiations Nonexistent
Oak Lawn Officials apparently thought that both Advocate Christ Hospital and the Oak Lawn Firefighters’ union would negotiate with the village even when they wouldn’t gain anything. Generally, negotiations work best when both parties want something. Bottom line is that the village hasn’t gotten any further with the demand the hospital pay a fee that legally it doesn’t have to pay. In the other negotiation, the village thought that the Safer Grant acceptance would get the union to give up minimum manning language. It looks like the village administration is going to reverse itself on that Safer Grant acceptance since the negotiations have not taken place with the firefighters’ union.
