Mrs. Heather McCarthy, a language arts and reading teacher at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School was honored with the 2017 Dr. Tererai Trent Award. The award is earned by a woman in the education field who exemplifies the qualities of Dr. Trent, a desire and focus to accomplish a task that serves others, a voice toward equality and empowerment for women and girls, motivates others to step up, dream and to take action, and a woman who uses their power and influence for good and always has a “give-back attitude” and a servant focus.
“When I was speaking at the Awards Gala, I said, ‘I believe giving back is one of the greatest lessons we can teach children. I want both my students and my own children to see when you give back it makes others feel good, which in return makes you feel good. I think the happiest people are the givers not the getters,” said McCarthy about receiving the honor.
Mrs. McCarthy was presented the award by Dr. Trent herself at an award ceremony on October 17 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Trent is hailed as Oprah Winfrey’s “All time favorite guest” and is one of today’s most internationally recognized voices for quality education and women’s empowerment.
