A Wisconsin woman said she was in Oak Lawn for a funeral and then dinner at Palermo’s.
Normally, that type of day doesn’t get one thrown in jail but Wendy Cusick ended here day in the early Sunday morning hours of the 19th in Oak Lawn’s holding cells.
Cusick came to the attention of police officers when a witness called the police after seeing a red SUV strike a parked silver Dodge in the 8700 block of 55th Court. The red SUV, allegedly driven by Cusick, continued southbound.
The police arrived to the scene and noted that the silver Dodge was pushed onto the parkway and sustained damage causing some debris of both vehicles to lay in the street.
As the officer spoke with the witness who had called the police, he noticed a red SUV now coming back toward the accident. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke with Cusick, who allegedly told the officer she was “having a sh…y day”. She allegedly admitted to hitting the silver Dodge, feeling bad and deciding to return to “make it right”.
The officer reported smelling the odor of alcohol while speaking with Cusick and observed that her eyes were glassy and bloodshot.
Cusick reportedly had trouble retrieving her license and insurance but did so eventually according to the police. She also allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol. She allegedly told the police that she was at a funeral earlier in the day, went to Palermo’s for dinner at about 6:45 p.m. and had “drank a whole bunch” although she didn’t know exactly how much according to the report.
The officer asked Cusick to perform field sobriety tests and she decided not to according to the police because she believed she wouldn’t perform well. She also declined to provide a breath sample. At about 2:45 a.m. she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. Later Cusick complied with the request for a breath test and the officer reported that the result was a .257 blood alcohol content, which is three times the legal limit for operating a vehicle.
During further questioning, Cusick allegedly replied, “No…of course I have,” when the officer asked if she had been drinking. He then asked what she had been drinking and she allegedly stated, “Beer, I mean water.”
Apparently tiring of the questioning, when asked how much she had been drinking, said, “one, you know this is bull…., one.”
Cusick, a 51 year old white female, provided a Wisconsin address to police. She was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed, obstructed windshield, and operating an uninsured vehicle.
