Oak Lawn Mayor Sandra Bury recently announced her support of Congressman Dan Lipinski over his female challenger Marie Newman returning the favor Lipinski bestowed on her in her reelection last April.
Bury’s endorsement was contained in an announcement from Lipinski that he had secured the support of Bury among 30 suburban mayors and village presidents. Bury’s endorsement did not mention Lipinski’s support of her own election and referred to specific items where she claimed his office had been helpful to Oak Lawn:
Congressman Lipinski is an accessible and highly visible representative who listens to our community’s needs and produces results. He has had a real tangible impact in making Oak Lawn an even better place to live, work, and shop by bringing us weekend Metra service, getting a train horn quiet zone added, aiding our first responders in acquiring multiple grants, and helping with revitalization around Patriot Station.
The mayor endorsement list was released shortly after two of Lipinski’s colleagues in the Illinois Congressional Delegation, Luis Guitierrez and Jan Schakowsky endorsed Newman at a press conference in Washington D.C.
Guitierrez, the leading voice for Hispanic immigrants in Illinois, said, “It’s not easy to endorse a challenger over a colleague in the House of Representatives.”
Schakowsky told gathered reporters that the endorsement was “not personal,” but rather “based on issues.” Despite Lipinski changing his position on DACA (The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), other differences with the party have made Lipinski a target. A poll commissioned by Newman’s campaign shows Newman winning the election by five points once voters are told of Lipinski’s position on various issues.
Newman has landed a slew of coveted endorsements from progressive groups such as NARAL Pro-Choice America, Democracy for America (DFA), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), MoveOn.org, and even Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and feminist icon Gloria Steinem. The Newman Campaign claims that these endorsements build on previous support from the online progressive community DailyKos and Blue America. Newman’s campaign said that the endorsements prove that her message is resonating strongly with the very Democratic-aligned voters who are turning out in droves across the country.
Bury, in backing Lipinski, is bucking many of the leading women in the Democratic Party, such as U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, 7 Illinois female general assembly members, and feminist icon Gloria Steinem who have announced support for Newman.
Bury owes a political debt to Lipinski, who involved himself in the 2017 Oak Lawn Mayoral race supporting the anti-union Mayor, Sandra Bury, who has been battling with local government union members during her tenure. Lipinski reportedly secured endorsements from trade union leaders for Bury in her re-election despite her anti-union record.
