Last weekend the Oak Lawn Community High School Journalism team traveled to Eastern Illinois University for the Illinois High School Association State Journalism Finals and earned various honors for their work.”
The duo of Nevin Abdelghani and Pamela Urchel earned third place in Yearbook Theme Development. Jacob Luzadder took home fourth place in Infographics. “We are so proud of the team and of all their effort this season,” said coach Patrick DiFilippo. “Most of the team got their first experience in Journalism this year, so we definitely see potential to do even more in the future.”
The team showed real potential at the TV News Broadcast competition, which ran as a pilot event at state this year. The team consisting of Salaam Khater, Samantha Welninski, and Marissa Perales finished third in the trial run of the event. While Oak Lawn students don’t have their own studio, the Spartans were going against schools that have their own studio and camera equipment. Using Oak Lawn High School ingenuity, the students created the newscast with only the use of an iPad.
