Father is a word that is not used in a vile curse. That’s probably because some guy attached mother to the F Word. Instead, father is used to describe goodness such as the moniker “Father of our Country” for George Washington.
For centuries, scribes have used “Town Fathers” to describe the leaders of the community. That one seems a little out of date in Oak Lawn with Mayor Sandra Bury now in her second term.
Fatherly advice may be the best use of the word father and it is one that signifies a kind, protective attitude toward the recipient. So instead of using Mother and the F Word, we’ll provide fatherly advice to someone in need on this Father’s Day.
An Oak Lawn mayoral appointee who fled Berwyn to join the Mayor’s political organization has used Facebook to spread fake news. Facebook leadership has been alerted to the problem with fake news vowing to stop the Russians but rarely have we heard about the problems with fake news in Oak Lawn.
The appointee of which we speak has time to monitor a Facebook Group. “Monitor” may be an understatement as the former Berywynian has made a name for himself by blocking anyone who disagrees with him or questions him on issues.
He’s also not a friend of the media. He’s taken more than his share of potshots at the Oak Lawn Leaf and Oak Lawn Patch. He called the Oak Lawn Patch a joke but we digress.
The latest incident was directed at the Oak Lawn Leaf and it is fake news.
Last week the Oak Lawn Leaf was the only media outlet to write about the 80 foot guitar that Rock and Brews wants to build in Oak Lawn outside their bar. The appointee, by the way, approved it in his official capacity as Mayoral lackey.
Again, we digress.
Instead of praising the Oak Lawn Leaf for breaking the news about the 80 foot guitar with bright lights. He instead diverted attention on Facebook by falsely claiming that the Oak Lawn Leaf had not written about the replacement of Oak Lawn’s crossing guards in favor of a contract with Andy Frain.
To add to his false news report, the appointee then said:
…the leaf must be in bed with this administration trying to sweep this under the rug. I wonder how much super secret under the table money they’re getting for not reporting on the dark underbelly of OL politics. Definitely a diversion reporting on the 80ft sign and not even whispering about the outsourcing of the crossing guards.
The fact is that the Oak Lawn Leaf has reported about the outsourcing of the crossing guards going back as far as December 11, 2013, when we wrote:
The Oak Lawn Leaf had provided exclusive budgetary analysis for the two days leading up to the meeting that revealed that the village was intending to privatize its school crossing guards…
We’ve reported on that story every time it came up since including last year when the village decided in its budget that it would outsource the crossing guards. By the way, Mayor Bury and her faithful minions denied the story was true. Now, a Mayoral appointee is claiming we are in bed with the Mayor?
It’s possible that the Berwyn transplant was using humor in his post when he made the ridiculously false claim. But the problem is the post isn’t funny. It is misleading but not funny.
So, on Father’s Day, we have some fatherly advice for a man that wants to be one of the town fathers and has attached himself to the Mayor. The advice is to leave the fake news to the Russians and if you’re trying to be funny please stop.
