A driver who allegedly provided confused answers to the police, including when his birth date, topped off an arrest at about 1 a.m. on July 8th in Oak Lawn.
The driver was stopped while traveling southbound on Pulaski after an Oak Lawn officer claimed that he saw the van drift to the left nearly crossing the white dashed lines between lanes. The officer also claimed that the driver was going faster than the posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour and accelerated.
The officer claimed that at about 99th Street, the van swerved to the left and crossed into the other lane temporarily. By 101st Street, the van allegedly was braking for no reason according to the police. Eventually, the officer reported that he stopped the van at about 103rd Street.
When the officer spoke with the driver, the answers to questions were confusing. When the officer asked about his driving, he allegedly said to the officer, “Oh no…my truck…my truck.” When the officer asked him what he was talking about, the driver allegedly said that he needed to fix the truck.
When he was asked for insurance, he allegedly claimed that his wife was following him in another car and that she had the proof of insurance with her in the other car. The driver was identified as Jose O. Velazquez-Perez.
When the officer asked Velazquez-Perez how much he had been drinking, he allegedly motioned with his hands to show over/under. The officer said he didn’t know what the hand gesture meant. Velazquez-Perez then allegedly said, “I’m not drinking, I’m not drinking.”
Velazquez-Perez allegedly told the officer he had drank for his birthday, which he said was the day before. However, his birthday was not the day before but rather a month earlier.
The officer tried to confirm that Velazquez-Perez was claiming that he had not been drinking. Velazquez-Perez allegedly then admitted, “I was drinking, but I’m not drinking a lot.”
The officer alleged that he failed the field sobriety test and refused to take the breathalyzer test. He was arrested for driving under the influence. He was also issued various citations. Velazquez-Perez is a 30 year old Hispanic male who provided an Oak Forest address.
