9:15 p.m. on July 6th was not a good opportunity for drag racing or chasing women on 95th Street in Oak Lawn.
Oak Lawn police were driving east bound on 95th Street at about 52nd Avenue when they claimed that two vehicles were traveling west bound at a “high rate of speed”. A Ford Van was in the center lane and a Ford Mustang was in the curb lane of the three lane highway. According to the police, the Mustang appeared to be ahead of the van by a car length.
The police alleged that the radar system timed the Mustang at 72 miles per hour while the van was putting along at 68 miles per hour in the 30 mile per hour speed limit zone. The officer made a U-turn and recorded the Mustang’s registration number before then switching behind the van. The Mustang’s information was broadcast over the police radio to alert other police officers.
The van was stopped at 95th and Massasoit. At first, the police allege that the driver, Manuel Cotto, denied speeding. However, Cotto then told the police that he saw the female driver in the Mustang, liked her looks and drover up beside her near Cicero Avenue.
The Mustang then accelerated and he claimed that he “attempted to keep up with her” but he wasn’t trying to race her because it would be foolish for a driver of a van to race a Mustang. Manual was able to provide a driver’s license and insurance card but was placed under arrest for aggravated speeding since it is not only foolish to race a Mustang it is illegal to travel 68 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.
The officer’s quick thinking to record the registration and plates information paid off as the Oak Lawn police contacted an Oak Lawn resident at the address the car was registered to according to the records. The man pointed to his daughter as the likely driver. The man also assured the police that his daughter would be at the police station within 15 minutes.
When Valerie Sweis arrived at the police station, the police checked the car plates and determined it was the same car that had been driving on 95th Street. Sweis allegedly admitted to being the driver on 95th Street and was taken into custody.
Sweiss, a 20 year old white female, provided an Oak Lawn address. Cotto, a 32 year old Hispanic male, provided an Addison address.
