On July 19th, while on patrol, an Oak Lawn officer alleged that he witnessed a Kia Spectra with Wisconsin license plates traveling at a high rate of speed near the 9100 block of Cicero Avenue.
After the officer turned onto Cicero he began following the Kia, which he alleged traveled from the center to the left lane and then cut across all three lanes to get to the curb lane. At Southwest Highway, the officer put his flashing lights on and the car stopped at about 94th and Cicero.
The driver Mary Star, had Wisconsin license plates and must have been a Green Bay Packer fan, although she claimed to live in Indiana.
Initially, Star allegedly failed to provide a license stating she didn’t have that or the insurance card on her or in the car. She suggested that the officer could call her insurance company but the officer informed her that the law requires drivers to carry proof of insurance. According to the police, she eventually provided a Wisconsin license to the officer.
Unfortunately for Star, the license was suspended and the insurance had been cancelled. The officer asked Star to get out of the car and claimed that Star become uncooperative. The officer explained that she had to go to the police station for the tickets and began to conduct an “inventory search” of the car. Star had allegedly denied there was anything “illegal” in the car but the officer noted that Star appeared nervous and she told the officer that she didn’t agree to the search.
The officer informed Star that the car was being towed and that the search was an allowable “inventory search”. Eventually Star allegedly told the police that two loaded pistol magazines were in the front console. A check of the records revealed that Star did not have a valid FOID card because it had been revoked according to records reviewed by the officer.
A female officer conducted as search of Star upon arrest and the police allege that a “large quantity” of money was removed from Star’s bra. The vehicle was towed and Star was taken to the police station, where she continued to be uncooperative according to the police. Star’s minor child was also transported to the station because she was in the car at the time of the arrest.
At the police station, Star’s child said she was thirsty and the police claim that they asked if they could give the young girl a glass of water. Star allegedly responded, “No, I don’t want her drinking Illinois water”.
When she was asked for an address in Indiana she allegedly replied, “I’m not telling you”. She also refused to sign the administrative tow packet stating “it’s only $100 in Wisconsin”.
Star was issued citations for improper lane usage, operating a vehicle with an obstructed view, having an obstructed windshield, improper window tints, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, and operating a vehicle without insurance.
Star posted a cash bond and exited the lobby but not before yelling “the Bears suck” to one of the officers. Mary Star is a 31 year old white female and she provided a Wisconsin address to the police.
