An Oak Lawn woman was charged with driving under the influence after police alleged she was driving twenty miles over the speed limit on 87th Street and failed a field sobriety test.
Rebecca Markiewicz was allegedly driving 57 miles per hour in the 35 mile per hour zone near Cicero Avenue when the police claim she changed lanes quickly and cut in front of another car. The officer made a U-turn and stopped the car.
The officer claimed that when he pointed to the car to pull over, Markiewicz moved about the vehicle “uncontrollably”. It may have been nervousness because her hand was shaking when she handed the officer her license and insurance card. She told the officer that she was picking her son up at 79th and Kedzie Avenue.
Markiewicz claimed she was nervous because the Oak Lawn Police had “locked her up” for a residential burglary. The officer alleged that her arms repeatedly moved uncontrollably, her head was jerking and her speech consisted of a fast stutter at times.
When the officer asked her if there was anything illegal in the car, Markiewicz allegedly said “You’re not searching my car, I don’t give you permission”. She was asked to exit the car where she reportedly took a field sobriety test. The police alleged that she failed that test and placed her under arrest for driving under the influence.
A search of Markiewicz’s car and her purse allegedly uncovered a clear plastic pipe that the police claim is used to smoke crack. During her transport to the police station, Markiewicz allegedly said, “I’m four months pregnant.”
The police asked Markiewicz to submit to a urine test. She allegedly responded, “Yes…so I take a piss test, I’m going to drop dirty, which I’m going to do and get a DUI anyway right.”
The police claim that Markiewicz admitted she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving, answering “yep” when asked the question. However, when she was asked if she was still under the influence she became more specific according to the police. She allegedly stated, “Yep, well not anymore…I haven’t smoked crack since five a.m.” She allegedly added, “I snorted Heroin after I smoked crack at about 7 a.m.” She was stopped at about 9:45 a.m.
Markiewicz, a 28 year old white woman with an Oak Lawn address, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, improper lane usage, and failure to notify the Secretary of State of address change.
