An alleged hit and run driver actually did run but on foot rather than in the car. When police arrived to the scene on November 2nd at about 11:30 p.m., they were informed that the accident occurred in the 6100 block of 97th street but that one of the driver’s had taken off running.
A light pole and snow route sign had been damaged by the accident. Witnesses provided a description of the man running and it wasn’t long before Oak Lawn police spotted a man stumbling near 96th Street. An ambulance was called because the man appeared injured.
The man’s car, which was left at the scene was searched and police claim that aerial firework explosives were found in the glove compartment.
While the man was escorted to the hospital, he allegedly was identified as William Morain. during the course of the transportation, Morain allegedly apologized to the office and allegedly admitted he was drunk.
At the hospital, Morain allegedly told a nurse, “I have coke in my pocket.” He provided a small baggy to the nurse who turned it over to the officer. A blood sample was taken from Morain that the police alleged equaled a blood alcohol content of .207. The suspected cocaine substance weighed .30 grams.
Morain was arrested for felony possession of cocaine. He was issued citations for leaving the roadway, damaging village property, driving without insurance and while suspended, driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with a misdemeanor for possession of the fireworks.
Morain, a 26 year old white male, with an Indiana address, was driving someone else’s car. The owner of the car said he didn’t give Morain permission to drive but he also didn’t want to pursue charges.
