The Oak Lawn Police were called to the Oak Lawn Hilton for a lost property report when a guest claimed his handgun was missing from his room.
The guest was told by the hotel that guns aren’t allowed in the rooms after a cleaning lady saw it in one of the drawers. When the guest was told he had to move it, he couldn’t find it in the drawer. The man told the police that when he checked into the hotel.
He went downstairs to the ballroom, leaving the gun in the drawer. When he returned and was resting in the room, the hotel told him that he had to remove the gun. At that time, he couldn’t find it and contacted the police.
The cleaning lady told the police that after she saw the gun, she locked the room and went to talk to the manager regarding what she found. While speaking with another employee in the break room she noticed that another man was in the break room also.
The cleaning lady went back to the room but the other man followed her in the elevator and toward the room’s door according to the statement to the police. The other man, Shawtrae Jackson, entered the room with the cleaning lady and allegedly said she wanted to steal the gun and sell it for cash. According to the cleaning lady, Jackson said, “I’m taking the gun”.
When the cleaning lady told Jackson that if he took the gun she would get in trouble, he agreed and they left the room. That’s when the cleaning lady went to the manager.
Jackson denied that he wanted to take the gun when the police questioned him at the hotel. At first, Jackson claimed he never went into the room but later admitted he had been in the room with the cleaning lady. According to the police, Jackson allowed them to search his jacket.
During a search of the jacket, the handgun was found. Jackson was arrested and while in custody allegedly gave a statement to the police. In the statement, he said he returned to the room using a master key card, removed the gun with the intent to sell it for quick cash.
Felony burglary charges were approved on October 25th against Shawntrae Jackson, a 20 year old black male with a Chicago address.
