Oak Lawn police have arrested a male student after he allegedly posted an online threat targeting Oak Lawn Community High School that included a comment about shooting students at the school.
A concerned parent posted the message on Facebook on the Oak Lawn Community Residents page after her son showed her his phone with the message. The parent alerted other parents through social media and reportedly contacted school officials who contacted the police.
The Oak Lawn police investigated the Snapchat post and were able to identify the student, whose name was not provided to the media.
The Snapchat post warned students not to go to school stating:
if u go to Oak Lawn High School don’t go tmrw cause im shootn tht bitch up and on sight to so if u do go tmrw hide cause whan i aim i dont miss remember tht
Classes were not cancelled but a 15 year old student was arrested and transported to the Cook County Juvenile Justice Center on a charge of threat of violence or death directed against persons at a school.
The high school’s assistant principal released the following statement regarding the threat:
“I am asking all parents to discuss this incident with their students, discuss the severity of making and posting threatening comments, and to report any additional information about this incident to a school administrator.
Although the police department and the school administration are confident the threat has been contained, the police department has offered to have police officers on campus tomorrow. In an effort to reassure students and parents that the school is safe, the administration has accepted the police departments offer.
Please know that school safety continues to be our top priority and we appreciate the students and parents that reached out the school administration earlier today when they learned of the incident.”
The school also left voice mail messages for parents to alert them that the situation occurred and that an arrest was made.
Sunday, on social media, parents had hoped that the threat was a hoax but the threat was the second one in less than a month at the school. In the first instance, the school and the police investigated rumors that a student had compiled a “kill list.” According to the school, the Oak Lawn police determined the threat was unfounded. However, the arrest of the second individual caused at least one individual to post on social media claiming the failure to take action on the first student was because she was white while the student arrested is black according to the post. The post appeared to have been removed sometime yesterday.
The identity of the students and their race has not been released.
