Recent events in and around Oak Lawn should give everyone reason to pause and give thanks this Thanksgiving Day.
Oak Lawn Community High School students, parents and teachers were scared earlier this week when a student allegedly sent a text message threatening to shoot others at the school. An alert fellow student showed his mother, who contacted the authorities. An arrest was made.
In light of the horrific tragedies that seem all too common at schools and even at hospitals, the Oak Lawn community can be thankful today that the threat was investigated and action was taken.
High school students shouldn’t have to worry about safety in their schools and parents shouldn’t have to worry if their son or daughter will return from school when they leave in the morning. Instead, high school should be about the prom, the basketball games, plays, getting an education and of course, football. Many Oak Lawn residents attend Brother Rice High School, which defeated cross town rival Marist High School last week to advance to the Class 8A Championship with a 13-0 record. While Marist, H.L. Richards and Oak Lawn High School fell short, we can all be thankful for the excitement that a possible state championship will bring the area.
Oak Lawn also can boast that it is home to Advocate Christ Hospital, which was ranked as the 4th best hospital in the entire State of Illinois.Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL is nationally ranked in 1 pediatric specialty, nationally ranked in 1 children’s specialty and high performing in 7 adult specialties and 7 procedures.
Of course, the Chicago Bears play today. Most Oak Lawn residents can give thanks that they are not Green Bay Packers fans this year. The Bears play the Detroit Lions today. Go Bears.
