An Oak Lawn homeowner called the police on December 4th at about 9:45 p.m. for a burglary in progress when he heard two people enter his basement.
The homeowner said that the two subjects were now trying to enter through a sliding glass door. When the officer arrived, he had his gun drawn as he saw a man and a woman walk around the corner behind the residence. He ordered each to stop and eventually the man and woman dropped to the ground on their knees. The man, whose middle name is “Elvis” was carrying a black bag of Icehouse Beer cans and the woman allegedly had an open Icehouse Beer can.
The homeowner identified the man on his knees as his son in law and thought the woman was the son in law’s girlfriend. The homeowner told police that he didn’t give the son in law or girlfriend authority to enter the house or stay at the home.
The homeowner explained to the police that he had heard someone walking up the basement stairs and yelled at them causing them to scurry back down the stairs and onto the patio where he claimed that they tried to enter the home through the sliding glass door. The homeowner was “All Shook Up” and called 9-1-1 and the police arrived on the scene.
The police confirmed that a window to the basement had been removed giving access to anyone to enter. The police found a “makeshift bed” set up under the stairs, using cushions. Some would describe the setup as their own “Heartbreak Hotel”.
The police also found the couple’s favorite beer, Icehouse Beer, but the several cans that were found were empty. At this point, nobody could blame the police for having “Suspicious Minds”.
The homeowner was not happy and couldn’t bring himself to say ‘That’s All Right’. He told the police he would sign complaints for criminal trespass to property. The couple was arrested and transported to the lockup.
The man, Jeffrey Elvis Gerena-Bujosa admitted that he was going into the basement through the window well and put some beers in the basement for later. He said that he and his girlfriend were sleeping at the home for the past two nights, entering through the window well because they didn’t want to disturb the homeowner.
The girlfriend, Ashleigh Edwards, told the police that she thought they were allowed to stay at the home but said that they had just poked their heads through the window when the homeowner yelled at them apparently causing them to leave like a “Hound Dog”. Alternatively, they could have decided to leave thinking it’s “Now or Never”.
Moments later, they walked into the police, who made amazing time in her story. She claimed that the sleeping bag and beer cans in the basement were left their over a week ago when they attended a birthday party. The homeowner said he never met her and had not seen the son in law in over a month.
Edwards didn’t display a “Burning Love” but added that she would have stayed with a friend if she knew that they would be in the basement. Edwards, a 25 year old white woman with a Berwyn address and Gerena-Bujosa, a 31 year old black male, with an Oak Lawn address, were arrested for criminal trespass to property.
According to several witnesses, the two individuals did not rock around the clock to the Jailhouse Rock. Instead, they were put in separate holding cells and we are told there was “A Little Less Conversation”.
