Oak Lawn detectives were in the 103rd Street Jewel parking lot on December 19th when they noticed a man and a woman walking through the rows of parked cars.
The detectives alleged that Ashlie Haag grabbed several discarded receipts from shopping carts in the parking lot. According tot he police Haag and Brian Wnek then examined those receipts before Haag entered the store.
A detective followed Haag and watched as she allegedly removed certain items from the shelf and returned them to Wnek who in return approached the customer service counter for a refund. According to the police, the duo used the same idea on other items with Wnek producing a receipt each time for a refund.
In addition, police claim the duo grabbed an alcoholic beverage and placed it in a cloth bag and they left the store without paying. The detectives stopped the two outside and said that Wnek had $25.19 from the “fraudulent” return. According to police, Haag admitted having a stolen bag of granola and two cans of alcohol in her bag. At first Wnek denied any involvement but the police said that he changed his story after being told that they were watching the whole time.
The store manager signed the complaint for retail theft and noted that the duo have been in the store in the past making returns with receipts. At the lockup, the police reported that Haag admitted that the two returned items with the receipts that they found.
Haag is 33 year old white female with an Oak Lawn address. Wnek, a 32 year old white male, shares that Oak Lawn address.
