A clerk at the 95th Street Walgreens called the police claiming that a man had left the store without paying for merchandise.
When the police officer arrived, the manager told the police she watched Mohamad Ziyadah walk through the store, carrying a black bag. He allegedly spent a lot of time in the toy aisle but didn’t purchase anything and walked past the registers according to the manager. When the front door sensor alarm went off, the manager said that Ziyadeh did not stop and instead left the store and started walking northbound on Cicero Avenue.
While one officer was interviewing the manager, another Oak Lawn police officer located Ziyadah, who matched the description given by the manager. The officer noted that Ziyadah was even carrying the black bag referenced by the manager.
The officer reportedly asked if he could look in the bag and said that Ziyadah consented to the search of both himself and the bags he was carrying. During a search of Ziyadah, the officer reported that he found a “Spider-Man action figure” inside his jacket. Ziyadah allegedly had concealed another Spider-man action figure in one of the bags.
Ziyadah allegedly admitted to taking the two action hero figures but didn’t explain why he needed the toys valued at $39.98. The police alleged that they also recovered 20 white round pills that they tentatively identified as Aceteminophen/Oxycodone. Ziyadah was not able to produce a prescription for the pills.
According to the police, a recording inside the store showed Ziyadah at the location. Ziyadah, a 29 year old white male, with a Chicago address, was charged with retail theft and possession of a controlled substance.
