Effective Property Tax Rates Likely to Make Heads Spin
Government watchdogs have long bemoaned the archaic property tax system in Illinois. Tax rates, tax levies, assessments, taxes owed, and estimated tax amounts are all part of a system that many believe has been rigged to confuse property owners. Now, the Chicago Civic Federation has an added another term to the jargon. That term, “effective property tax rate” is up everywhere in the metropolitan area ranging from a decade ago. The effective property tax rate is calculated by dividing the estimated market value of the properties and how much the owners pay in taxes. So, it is a percentage of the property value that you pay to the County Treasurer each year. For Oak Lawn, that percentage is 2.36 percent. Orland Park is at 2.34 percent, while Burbank is 2.22 percent. Evergreen Park is 2.54 percent.

Recent Story Of Blackface in Virginia Linked to Oak Lawn’s St. Gerald
A publication known as the National Catholic Reporter recently wrote a story about Virginia’s Governor donning blackface in the 1980’s and linking it to an alleged practice within Catholic parishes going back more than fifty years earlier. While the article notes that by the turn of the 20th century, minstrel shows were no longer the most popular form of entertainment in the United States, it opines that Catholic schools and churches continued to stage blackface shows for decades. Then, the writer drops the bombshell, pointing to a “Booster Boy’s Minstrel”, November 30, 1930 in Oak Lawn at St. Gerald’s. The image to the left confirms it.
Good News for Anthem Memory Care
LTC Properties in a report to investors announced that Anthem recently has “turned the corner.” LTC had issued a default notice on a master lease covering 11 memory care communities operated by Anthem in 2017 and was evaluating its options for the communities at that time. LTC recently agreed to a 45% increase in rent from Anthem compared to 2018. Part of the optimism is based on increased occupancy at Harvester Place in Burr Ridge, and Grace Point Place in Oak Lawn.
