Marie Newman, who lost a close election for Congress to longtime incumbent Dan Lipinski, is getting the band back together for another shot at unseating Lipinski.
Yesterday, a coalition of organizations including EMILY’s List, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee endorsed Marie Newman for Congress in the Third District of Illinois.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have the support of such an influential caucus of organizations. Their confidence in my candidacy is a true honor,” said Marie Newman. “I am running for Congress because my community in Illinois’ Third District deserves a representative who believes in fighting for an economy that works for everyone, without exception.”
“I am proud to have the endorsement of a coalition whose mission is to advocate for women, working families, workers, the middle class and progressive policies. I pledge to join them in their fight in Congress because everyone in our community deserves a voice. Dan Lipinski is a lip-service Democrat who has routinely jeopardized his constituents access to affordable healthcare and who has long been a threat to working families, the middle class, women, immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community. We deserve a new voice in Washington, a real Democrat with a real plan.”
According to Newman’s news release, Dan Lipinski has repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood, voted to limit access to birth control, and does not support the Equal Rights Amendment. He was the only Democrat in Illinois to vote against Obamacare.
Lipinski defeated Newman by 2,145 votes, or 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent, in last year’s primary. Lipinski has compared Newman’s campaign to the Tea Party naming it the “Tea Party of the Left”.
