District 123 students and staff held a walk-a-thon on May 10, 2019 and raised over $47,000 for the Live Like Abby foundation in support of pediatric brain tumor research.
This year would have been Abby Wujcik’s graduation from Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School. Abby was a 6-year-old student at Kolmar Elementary School when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
After 15 months of a courageous battle, she died from the disease at age 8. Her parents, Kristyn and Kevin Wujcik joined with the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation as Live Like Abby to honor her and help raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research.
The Like Like Abby Foundation also promotes awareness and education about this terrible disease, the inadequacy of treatment options and the need for new approaches in care.
The top five individual fundraisers were (1) Kailey at $2638; (2) Swiech’s fight for a cure $1,165.88; (3) Caring Coyotes at $850.18; (4) Julie Casey at $786.31; and (5) Mrs. Thorpe’s Second Grade at $581.74.
The top five teams were Ryan Allen Advisory at $2.66K, Mrs. Mural’s Team at $946.47, Team Edie Advisory at $840.92, Keblusek’s Kids Crush Cancer at $522.29 and Hines Advisory at $487.72
The original fundraising goal was $30,000 and the donations crushed that goal.
